Useful things,
carefully connected.

I am John Colby. Colby Consulting is the home for the systems, experiments, and long-running projects I build to make complicated things easier to understand.

The MyMusic project

A better way to explore a music collection.

Part library, part knowledge graph, part ongoing conversation with the data.

A few things
in motion.

01

Music / Data / Exploration

MyMusic Explorer

A personal music database that grows beyond a list of files: artists, songs, albums, credits, sources, and the relationships between them.

Building now
02

Systems / Automation

Small systems that keep going

Tools that harvest, organize, and supervise work in the background while keeping the important decisions visible.

Taking shape
03

Notes / Experiments

Ideas worth following

A home for investigations that start as questions and become something useful through patient iteration.

Why this exists

Curiosity is more useful when it leaves a trail.

I have spent a long time working with data, software, and the messy middle between an idea and a working system. This site is a simple front door to that work.

Some projects are public. Some are private. All of them are built with the same preference: make the next step clearer than the last one.

The front door

this goes?

The public site will stay lightweight. The deeper tools will remain behind their own protected doors.
